Teacher Education Program


Elementary Teacher Certification

     People who complete the Elementary Teacher Education certification course of study may teach in elementary (grades one through six) classrooms. They earn a Massachusetts certificate at the Advanced Provisional level, similar to initial teaching certificates in other states. Teachers with certification at the Advanced Provisional level must complete a clinical masters program within five years in order to earn a Standard teaching certificate.
     Please note: many of the following courses will have been taken in conjunction with your primary major. For specifics, please confer with your advisor or Paula Sable by e-mail or phone at (508)372-7161x5207.


 

COURSE OF STUDY

Competency Courses: (24 credits)
     The following courses are required competency courses for elementary certification. Students must complete each of these with a grade of C or better to be eligible for 300-level education courses:
  • PSY 101 Introduction to Psychology
  • CIS 101 Introduction to Computers
  • MAT 100 Basic Algebra
  • MAT 103 Intermediate Algebra
  • One additional math course; any of the following are acceptable:
  • ENG 101 Critical Inquiry: Exposition
  • ENG 102 Critical Inquiry: Research and Literature
  • PSY 301 Child and Adolescent Psychology
Education Courses (31 credits)
     These are the required education courses for elementary certification: (candidates must earn a grade of B- or higher in each course):
  • EDU 181 Introduction to Teaching and Learning
  • EDU 200 General Methods of Elementary Education
  • EDU 201 The Teaching of Reading
  • EDU 301 Methods of Teaching Elementary Math and Science
  • EDU 302 Methods of Teaching Elementary Language Arts and Social Studies
  • EDU 305 The At-risk Learner in the Classroom
  • EDU 401 Student Teaching Practicum and Seminar
     Students interested in the Elementary Education Certification Program must maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.60 to be eligible for the program; a cumulative grade point average of 2.80 is required to be eligible for placement in a student teaching practicum.
