field studies are an important aspect of environment majors

Bradford's science majors foster critical observation, objective thinking, and creative problem solving. Our curriculum emphasizes both depth and breadth: all students majoring in science develop an interdisciplinary foundation in biology, chemistry, physics, math, statistics, and scientific research methods before focusing in on their majors. Our programs all have hands-on components-for example, helping manage the Bradford "Back 40," our own 40-acre forest and wetland field site, or participating in faculty-led field studies in the Caribbean and Latin America. Bradford science students may also take advantage of off-campus internships, field studies, and courses at partner institutions. Our science majors are good preparation for careers in biological or environmental research, biotechnology, health care, and technical or pharmaceutical sales. Bradford graduates often teach the public about science and the natural world in museums, national and state parks, aquariums, and zoos.
Our science majors also provide a foundation for graduate study in biology, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and veterinary science.

Bradford field studies

Bradford faculty members lead short-term, intensive field studies in Maine, the Caribbean, and Latin America. A semester-long field experience is in the planning stages. Study away locations include:

  • Conservation and ecological programs in Asia, Africa, and the Americas through the School for International Training
  • Field studies in Australia, Costa Rica, Kenya, British Columbia, and Mexico through the School for Field Studies
  • Sea Semester at Woods Hole and at sea through the Sea Education Association

recent internship sites

  • American Cancer Society Research Department
  • Massachusetts Department of Environmental Affairs
  • Merrimack River Watershed Council
  • New England Aquarium o Student Conservation Association
  • University of Massachusetts Medical School

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Graduates are prepared for employment in the following fields: biological research, biotechnology, governmental and private health organizations, environmental or marine laboratories, and related areas. Other types of employment choices include technical and pharmaceutical sales, environmental consulting, and education of the public in National and State Parks, aquariums, zoos, etc.

GRADUATE STUDY

Graduates will be prepared for admission into graduate and professional schools. These include schools with MS and Ph.D. academic science programs, teacher education programs, and professional programs such as medicine, veterinary science, dentistry, and pharmacy.

PRE-PROFESSIONAL INFORMATION

Students interested in medicine, optometry, dentistry, veterinary medicine, or other allied-health pre-professional study need not major in the sciences. Such students may major in any of the available curricula at Bradford College, but should consult with the Chair of Natural Science and Mathematics as soon as possible about their graduate plans to ensure proper advisement.
