In the Bradford sociology major, students examine American society and its institutions from a cross-cultural perspective, learning to recognize both the common and unique features of societal organization. This understanding helps students become more effective in their lives as well as in their careers. Our faculty emphasizes the importance of looking at society from multiple perspectives and pays particular attention to the development, process, and impact of social policy change. We help our students to understand the principles of social science analysis and to apply these principles to issues in our communities and in the world at large. Students gain practical skills in critical evaluation and analysis, oral and written communication, problem solving, research, and information retrieval.
Although the specific skills and understanding gained from study of sociology can be valuable in any career setting, they are especially useful in the fields of social work, public and human services, and business. The major is also excellent preparation for graduate study in such areas as social science, public health, education, psychology, sociology, politics, and law.
