The Creative Arts emphasizes the relationship of the arts to each other and to society. Students in this major are encouraged to explore their potential for creative expression and to refine their aesthetic judgment through a combination of study and hands-on experience in the Visual Arts, Performing Arts, and Graphic Design. Students are encouraged to explore a wide range of courses, programs, experiences, and to develop a practical minor and/or internship that will serve their career plans.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The tools of aesthetic training, creative problem solving, perceptual awareness, and craftsmanship can enhance a graduate’s qualifications for any profession, and Creative Arts majors are prepared to pursue careers as actors, artists, musicians, designers, dancers as well as careers as teachers, managers, and technicians. Workshops sponsored by the Career and Internship Center and the Creative Arts Division help prepare students to develop their own career goals and paths.

GRADUATE STUDY

The Creative Arts major serves as a base for specialized graduate study and/or professional training in areas such as art administration, art education, art therapy, graphic design, studio art, music, dance, theater, and media. Graduates have been accepted into programs at Boston University, New York University, and Rochester Institute of Technology, among others.

CONCENTRATION POSSIBILITIES

Students are encouraged to explore all of the arts, and are also given an opportunity to delve deeply into one of three broad disciplines – Visual Arts, Performing Arts, or Graphic Design. Visual Arts students develop their own aesthetic and artistic style studying art history, photography, painting, drawing, weaving, ceramics, sculpture, book and papermaking, and other special topic courses. Performing Arts (Music, Dance, and Theater Programs) provides many opportunities in and out of the classroom for students to develop their own skills, and to appreciate the work of other artists. Students are expected to participate in performances throughout their four years of study. The Graphic Design Program is a new and exciting area that teaches students design principles and skills to enable effective application of design and multimedia software. Students become knowledgeable in a number of areas including print design, typography, illustration, corporate design, web page design, animation, advertising, and package design.
